Turning trash into treasure is a student-led creation activity. In our Senior Intro class, students have been exploring materials and their everyday uses as part of our How the World Works unit. They examined the environmental effects of over-relying on plastics, linked to water and air pollution and the waste of paper, which contributes to deforestation and harm to ecosystems.

To bring these discussions to life, students designed and built their own toys for a Recycled Toys Factory—both in school and at home. One standout moment was when Hanbyeol brought in a beautifully crafted jellyfish toy made from recycled plastic, paper, glitter and colourful strings. Her creation sparked enthusiasm across the class, and after a student vote, everyone joined in to create their own version.

This fully student-led activity encouraged creativity, problem-solving and patience, while promoting meaningful conversations about sustainability. It was a brilliant reminder that recycling isn’t just important, it can also be imaginative, collaborative and fun.

Seeing the students take such pride and ownership in this project was truly inspiring, and their final creations were a wonderful celebration of learning and environmental care.
